48-HOUR ADVENTURE RACE

This event is for experienced adventure racers and skilled outdoor people.

The West Coast is arguably the most rugged terrain in New Zealand—think Fiordland, but tilted at a 30-degree angle. It’s scenically breathtaking, yet beneath its beauty lies a stark reality: this place can be brutal and unforgiving. Anyone taking on this race must recalibrate their toughness meter—this will be an extremely demanding course.

Teams must have the skills to manage themselves in harsh and unpredictable environments. The ability to assess danger, manage risk, and make sound decisions in remote locations is essential. Flash flooding could halt progress, forcing teams to take refuge on high ground until water levels recede. In severe weather, rescue may not be an option.

Success on the West Coast demands extensive outdoor experience and the ability to operate in all conditions. Survival skills—fire lighting, emergency shelter building, and weather interpretation—will be invaluable. Teams must be prepared to shift instantly from race mode to survival mode, with safety as the top priority. If reading this sends shivers down your spine, consider entering the 24-hour event instead.

The 48-hour race is fully unsupported, with event staff managing team logistics. Bike boxes are not required.
