Pack-Rafting Requirements

For both the 24-hour and 48-hour adventure races at True West, teams are required to provide their own pack-rafts and associated gear. While it is recommended that teams use double pack-rafts, single pack-rafts are acceptable if that is the team’s preference.

24-Hour Race: All team members must be proficient grade 2+ paddlers, capable of paddling rapids at this level. They should be familiar with the associated hazards and risks, and possess the skills necessary to perform rescues in grade 2+ water.

48-Hour Race: For the 48-hour race, the requirements are the same, but team members must be proficient in paddling grade 3+ water and have the necessary rescue skills for this level of difficulty.

Other Equipment:

  • 4 paddles (preferably 4-piece split paddles)

  • Pumps: One electric and one bag pump per team recommended. Consider including a plastic barrel pump as an additional option.

  • Repair kit: A decent amount of tape, spare valves, and T-zip lube.

  • 4 kayak helmets (bike helmets are not permitted; if you’re a whitewater paddler without a kayak helmet, please reconsider your gear choice).

  • 2 throw bags with screw gate carabiners.

  • 4 PFDs (minimum 55N+ buoyancy). For teams in the 48-hour race, we highly recommend PFDs with 60-75N buoyancy for enhanced safety.

  • Each team member must have either a full-length leg wetsuit or a drysuit.

Important Notes:

  • Safety is our priority, and it’s essential that all team members are well-equipped and capable of handling the challenges posed by pack-rafting in the adventure race conditions.

  • Teams should also prepare for any potential repairs or adjustments during the event, so a thorough check of all equipment before race day is recommended.

  • Teams must be prepared for night paddling, so it is essential to have reliable lights and spare batteries, along with a secure method of mounting the lights for safe and effective navigation in the dark.

By meeting these equipment and proficiency standards, teams will be better prepared for a safe and successful experience on the water.
