Traveling to the 2026 True West Adventure Race – Hari Hari, West Coast
For teams flying to the South Island, there are several options to reach Hari Hari, depending on whether you are traveling domestically or internationally.
Domestic Travel
If you are flying from within New Zealand, the most convenient airport is:
Hokitika Airport (HKK) – The closest airport to Hari Hari, approximately 75 km (1-hour drive) south via State Highway 6. Rental cars are available at Hokitika Airport for the journey.
International Travel
For teams traveling from overseas, there are two main international airport options:
- Christchurch International Airport (CHC) – The largest airport in the South Island, with a range of international and domestic connections. From Christchurch, it's a 190 km drive (2.5 hours) to Hokitika, then another 75 km (1 hour) to Hari Hari, totaling around 265 km (3.5 hours of driving).
- Queenstown International Airport (ZQN) – Another option for international travelers. From Queenstown, the drive to Hari Hari is longer, at 470 km (6.5 hours), passing through the scenic Haast Pass and along the rugged West Coast.
Recommended Route
For ease of travel, we recommend flying into Hokitika if possible. For international travelers, Christchurch is the preferred arrival point due to more frequent flight options and a shorter drive compared to Queenstown.
